Knitting 101 – Knitting is both fun and relaxing! It’s a great way to develop eye-hand coordination and focus, burn off some nervous energy, and knit away some stress. And, handknit items make great gifts! This class is for the complete beginner and for someone who’s tried to knit before and needs some help. Students will build a solid foundation in basic skills: knit and purl stitch; increases, decreases and yarnovers; cast-ons and bind-offs; fixing mistakes; knitting garter, stockinette, ribbing, and seed stitch fabrics; and how to read patterns and work with gauge guidelines. Some homework time (at least 10 minutes a day) will help the student be more successful. Class kit includes knitting supplies, handouts, and links to online demos. Michelle is a Certified Knitting Instructor through the Craft Yarn Council, and has successfully taught students of many ages how to turn yarn into cool stuff. Sundays, 12:30 – 2:30 pm, 5 sessions starting February 5 and April 2.

First Socks – If you’ve never had a pair of custom fit, handknit socks, you are in for both a journey and a treat! Socks are THE best knitter’s project: since they’re small, you can work on socks even during the hot months of the year; everybody needs socks, so they make great gifts; and, they have their own major niche in the knitting world. After you learn basic construction, there are all sorts of methods to refine fit, function, and design.
In this class, we’ll start with a very basic cuff-down pattern, written for DK weight yarns. We will discuss basic fit and sizing considerations, and knit a crew-length sock with a traditional flap-and-turn heel and Kitchener-closed toe. And, we will discuss alternatives for all of these construction elements. We will knit samples in class for practice, then you can take the techniques home and work them into your class project.
Prerequisite knowledge
Students should be comfortable with knit stitch and purl stitch; knitting in the round using at least one method of the following methods: DPNs, magic loop, or 2 circs; cast-on and bind-off; increases and decreases; and know the difference between stockinette and garter stitch fabrics.
This class is designed for a range of knitting abilities, from post-102 and up—if you’ve successfully knitted a hat in the round, this class could be the next skill-building class for you. More experienced knitters will have an opportunity to build their knowledge too. Thursdays, 5:45 – 7:45 pm, 4 sessions starting March 2.

Just added! Raglan T-Shirt – Summer projects mean light-weight tops and warm-weather yarns, so you can keep on sweater knitting without the weight and heat of wool in your lap! In this class, we will knit a short sleeve pullover top: a relaxed-fit, raglan-style V-neck that you can wear until it’s time for long sleeves and wool again in the fall. We start with a simple pattern and create options for fit customization and styling. We’ll also learn about making and reading gauge swatches, working with stripes (optional), and how to plan for the behavior of plant-based yarns. There will be handouts as well as videos for reference, and lots of one-on-one assistance from the teacher. Most knitting will be done outside of class, since we spend class time on skill building and discussion.
Prerequisite knowledge
Students should be comfortable with knit stitch and purl stitch; know at least one cast on and bind off method; know the difference between stockinette and garter stitch fabrics; know how to knit in the round; and know at least one increase and decrease method. Students should also have some experience using shaping in a project, such as a hat, mittens, slippers, or toys. This class will be great for a first-time sweater knitter. Thursdays, 5:45 – 7:45 pm, 6 sessions starting April 6.
